Prayer Song
Inspired by the phenomenal ikaros (ceremonial songs) of Maria Cristina Mendoza, some years ago I entered an inquiry to create ceremonial songs in languages of the lands that I, and my ancestors, are from: England, Scotland and Wales. This search brought me first to Old English and then to ancient Celtic tongues. First Proto-Celtic and then to a reimagining of Brythonic/Common Brittonic, which would have been spoken across pre-Roman southern England. From this exploration and play, songs started to appear in my mind and in voice.
The songs flow as offerings — prayers of praise, celebration and gratitude for the more than human world, upon whom we depend for life. Each song has a life force of its own, often arriving unbidden and not leaving until it has taken form and flight in the world. Prayer song has become an intrinsic practice to me and part of my honouring and connection with all of life.
I will start to post audio clips of the songs. Contact me if you would like to receive a recording and the lyrics to be able to sing and share the songs in circle and ceremony.
